How to Limit TikTok Screen Time on iPhone

Set a TikTok limit that actually holds on iPhone: iOS App Limits, TikTok's own screen time settings, and Pact's unlock budget, schedules and Hard Mode.

To limit TikTok on an iPhone, set an App Limit in Settings › Screen Time. You can add TikTok's own daily screen time reminder on top. Both help, but you can dismiss both in a second. If "just five more minutes" keeps turning into an hour, you need a limit that interrupts you before you open the app, and doesn't let you out early.

Why TikTok is so easy to lose time on

TikTok's For You feed is full-screen, starts playing right away, and moves to the next video with one swipe. There is no page to finish and no natural end. Each video is short, so it never feels like you are committing to anything, and the minutes add up without you noticing.

For that reason, limits based on how often you open TikTok tend to work better than limits based only on total minutes.

Option 1: iOS Screen Time App Limits

  1. Go to Settings › Screen Time and turn it on if needed.
  2. Tap App Limits › Add Limit.
  3. Under Social (or Entertainment, depending on how iOS files it), select TikTok and tap Next.
  4. Choose a daily time. Use Customize Days if you want more on weekends.
  5. Keep Block at End of Limit on and tap Add.

When the time runs out, iOS shows a Time Limit screen. It lets you ask for one more minute, fifteen more minutes, or ignore the limit for today. A Screen Time Passcode set by someone else closes that gap, but not if it's your own code.

Option 2: TikTok's built-in screen time settings

TikTok has its own tools under Settings and privacy › Screen time. Depending on your app version, you'll find:

  • a daily screen time limit that asks for a passcode or shows a prompt when you reach it,
  • screen time breaks that remind you to stop after a set stretch of continuous use,
  • a weekly screen time update summarising your use.

These are good for noticing your time. They still live inside the app you are trying to leave, and you can dismiss them.

Option 3: Pact — friction that works before you open TikTok

Pact shields TikTok through Apple's Screen Time API and asks you to decide before the feed starts:

  1. Add TikTok to your restricted apps after granting Screen Time access once.
  2. Set a daily unlock budget with a session limit, for example two or three opens a day. On each open, Pact asks how long you need, and TikTok shields itself again afterwards.
  3. Add an app limit for a total daily time cap. It can be different on weekdays and at weekends.
  4. Schedule TikTok-free hours. Good Night's Rest keeps it closed at bedtime, and Deep Focus covers work or study blocks.
  5. Turn on Hard Mode so a session can't be ended early and reopened on impulse. You can also make any change to your restricted apps require a random code.

Pact also shows a 5-minute warning before the lock, so you can finish the video you are watching instead of being cut off mid-sentence.

Schedules, app limits and Hard Mode need Pact Premium. The app itself is free to download.

A simple plan for your first week

Day Setup
1–2 Only watch your usage. Note when you open TikTok the most.
3 Session limit: 4 opens a day, 20 minutes each
4–5 Add a schedule for your worst hour (often bedtime)
6–7 Drop to 3 opens and turn on Hard Mode

Habits that help

  • Turn off TikTok notifications. Most opens start with one.
  • Keep TikTok off your home screen, or put it in a folder on the last page.
  • Charge your phone outside the bedroom. A bedtime schedule is easier to keep when the phone isn't within reach.
  • Replace, don't just remove. Decide what the freed-up ten minutes are for, such as a walk, a book or a message to a friend.

FAQ

Can I block TikTok only at night?

Yes. Use iOS Downtime or a Pact schedule such as Good Night's Rest to block TikTok for a recurring window, and leave it available the rest of the day.

Does TikTok's own limit work for adults?

It works as a reminder. When you reach the limit, TikTok shows a prompt, and you can usually get past it in the app. A block at the system level is harder to ignore.

Will limits delete my drafts or data?

No. iOS and Pact only shield the app from being opened. Your account, drafts and settings stay as they are.

How many opens a day is reasonable?

Most people find two or three deliberate visits enough to keep up. Start a little above your current habit and reduce it week by week.
